 Nokia's numbering system can sometimes be a bit baffling. As a general rule, bigger numbers tend to denote higher specifications, but that can vary, and when you get two fairly similar numbers, such as the 635 and the 630, it's not always obvious what the differences are likely to be


   Like the 630 and indeed most Nokia handsets these days, the 635 comes in a range of bright colours (yellow, green and orange, as well as black or white) and you can swap covers to suit your mood, but unlike the 630 the casing has a glossy finish rather than matte.

It has the same less-than-HD 4.5-inch screen as the 630, which delivers a resolution of 854x480 pixels (214ppi). It's not super-sharp but for most tasks the lack of HD resolution isn't too much of a hindrance -- pictures, videos and web pages tend to look a little softer, but not overly lacking in detail.

Processor and performance

  The quad-core 1.2GHz processor backed by 512MB RAM may not be the fastest, but it proved to be fairly smooth in operation, strolling around the latest Windows Phone 8.1 interface reasonably quickly, although it did occasionally take a little time to dwell on opening some apps. Our AnTuTu benchmark test gave it a score of 11,417, which is quite a jump from the Lumia 620 for instance, and puts it close behind the likes of the Lumia 1020.

          The 5-megapixel camera has no Carl Zeiss lens like the pricier Lumias but it does come with a large f/2.4 aperture, autofocus and several settings, including downloadable camera apps like Nokia Refocus, which allows you to add depth to your pics by changing the focal point. There's no flash or dedicated shutter button (you'll need to press the screen to take a pic), but it's capable of taking some okay photos so long as you're careful with your light. Disappointingly though, there's no forward-facing camera for video calls.

       The 4.5in display offers a less-than-HD resolution of 960x540 pixels and while it's okay for web browsing and video views, it certainly lacks the 'pop' of the better HD screens. It's reasonably sensitive though, and we didn't have any problems getting it to accept our brushes and presses.

Software and processor
It's running the 4.2.2 Jelly Bean version of Android, which is looking a little aged these days, and there's no definite date for an update to KitKat. It has Samsung's TouchWiz interface though, which makes a few tweaks to the basic Android and adds a fair amount of extra including Smart Stay, which uses the front-facing camera to check if you're still looking at the screen before switching off (not always reliable), the S Planner calendar app and the Samsung Hub offering access to Samsung's apps, music, books and videos store. It comes with 8GB of memory on board but fortunately you can add another 64GB to this via microSD card.The dual-core 1.7GHz processor is backed by 1.5GB RAM and proved to be pretty nippy in practise. Apps opened quickly and there was no obvious delay when browsing and working. It didn't seem to have any trouble running HD video games like Real Racing 3 and our AnTuTu benchmark test gave it a score of 20,204, which puts it at the higher end of other dual-core handsets we've tested, ahead of the HTC One mini 2 and Motorola Moto G for instance. The 2100mAh battery wasn't exceptional but didn't let the sound down either -- you should expect to get a day's worth of regular use out of it but not much more.
The 5-megapixel camera sounds like the bog standard for midrange smartphones these days but it's actually pretty good. It includes autofocus and an LED flash, but also comes with a range of modes including Auto, Night, Sports, Panorama, Sound & Shot, Continuous Shot and Best Shot. There's a good level of detail in the shots and while colours may not be especially vibrant, they at least look accurate.          This morning I was pleasantly surprised to see that my Nexus 4 wanted to update to version Android 4.4 KitKat , and simply turning on my smartphone, meaning that the last OTA is being deployed on all Nexus 4. The update comes just days after Google released an update to fix bugs for some of its other Nexus devices.

This version of Android KitKat OTA for the Nexus 4 has been delayed, probably to allow Google to fix bugs found after deployment on the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 , tablets that have been updated before.

After downloading around 239 MB - 238.9 MB to be exact - and preferably by a WiFi connection, you must have at least 20% of the battery to apply the update. After a few reboots, personally I counted three, you'll have freshly installed build KRT16S.

As mentioned many times on the blog, this update is not a revolution in terms of user experience, especially because it will not bring the new application launcher found on the Nexus 5 . Galaxy S5 owners can breathe easy when it comes to battery life. While most Android devices available today have some sort of battery-saving feature, Samsung went above and beyond with its latest flagship device. Here's how you can get all-day battery life and more on your Galaxy S5:

Power-saving mode

Samsung's power-saving mode is nothing new; the feature has been around since the Galaxy S2. When enabled, this mode can be used to block background app data, limit the phone's performance, reduce the screen frame rate, lower the brightness, and even change the display to grayscale.

This mode will greatly enhance your battery life without reducing your phone's capabilities by that much. Since it does limit your phone's processing power, however, I recommend disabling it before playing any games or using any CPU-intensive apps.

Ultra power-saving mode

Enable the Galaxy S5's ultra power saving mode to get the most out of your battery. Samsung claims that when the device is fully charged, this mode will give your phone up to 12.5 days of battery life. In fact, with only 10 percent of battery life remaining, enabling ultra power-saving mode can make your phone last for another 24 hours.

There are some downsides, though. Ultra power-saving mode will greatly reduce your phone's capabilities. In addition to changing your display to grayscale, the mode will limit you to using only select apps like the Phone, Messages, Internet, Emergency Alerts, Google+, Facebook, Twitter, and a few others. Only six of these apps, however, can be placed on your home screen.
The mode will also automatically disable mobile data when the screen is turned off, and disable both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. These can be re-enabled in the settings menu by pressing the three-dot icon in the top right-hand corner of the screen. The limited settings menu also gives you the ability to adjust the volume, brightness of the display, and toggle on location services.

Ultra power-saving mode can be enabled by going to settings and scrolling down to the "power saving" option.

Brightness

Most people keep their phone's brightness on auto mode, but you may not know that this can actually be worse for your battery. Auto mode will automatically adjust your screen's brightness based on the conditions around you. The mode utilizes the phone's sensors, which, because they're in use all the time, actually drains your battery more rapidly than adjusting your brightness manually. Auto mode will also sometimes leave your display at a level that is too bright for your environment.

In most cases -- being outside on a sunny day not being one of them -- you don't need to have the brightness maxed out. To save your battery, I recommend turning the brightness level down to somewhere below halfway, or to a level that is acceptable for your eyes.
